Characters rarely cross the line in one dramatic leap.

They inch toward it.

First comes rationalization.

“I’m doing this for my family.”
 “It’s just this once.”
“I deserve something for all I’ve sacrificed.”

Each step feels reasonable in isolation. But together, they form a path that’s hard to reverse.

Crime novels excel at portraying this descent because it mirrors real life. People don’t become corrupted overnight. They become tired. They become afraid. They become trapped.

And once they’re in deep, turning back feels impossible.
